Bistro OneSix

like a liquid disco ball

Some people save sparkling wines just for special occasions. Apparently pretty much any day can be special because it’s hard for me to pass up the bubbles, and it just got harder.

A few weeks ago we were out for a friend’s birthday (a special occasion indeed) when I ordered something from the bubbly menu. When the waiter showed up with this, I was both surprised and thrilled.

Ok…so probably the true Champagne snobs would turn up their nose at sparkling wine in a can but apparently I’m not a Champagne snob because this exemplified my very feelings about sparkly – that it should be fun and it should make me happy. Mission accomplished. As if they didn’t have me with the little pink can, the attached telescoping straw sealed the deal.

A little research on the product yielded that it is named for Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter, Sophia. He promised her when she was a little girl that someday he would make a sparkling wine and name it after her. It’s a blend of Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Riesling so it’s a little sweeter than my normal pick for sure but it is dangerously drinkable.

I was thrilled last week when it was my birthday (more reasons to celebrate!) and my husband showed up at my office with a 4-pack of these tied to a big, pink mylar balloon. Believe me – I’ve considered stashing these everywhere from my desk drawer to my purse because I’m sure with the pink can and bendy straw I could pretty much get away with drinking these anywhere.

While some reviews don’t exactly give it high marks I think they are missing the point. They are taking something seriously that shuns seriousness.

One review that did get it though read, “A distinctive blend as unconventional as the woman who inspired it, Mini is for the impromptu, impetuous, live passionately for the moment kind of person.”

Ok, that’s good, but I’d add that it’s like a liquid disco ball – a lot of sparkles, loads of fun and a party is sure to pop up whenever one is around. Cheers to that!
