Bistro OneSix

eating my way across sacramento

I love to go new places – to put on my walking shoes and explore the streets and shops and restaurants of a new city. This past weekend when I was in Sacramento for the International Food Bloggers Conference I had this opportunity and boy do I have some restaurants for you!

Sacramento is the capitol of California and there’s a beautiful park, aptly named Capitol Park, that showcases all kinds of really interesting trees including the gum tree shown here but while sightseeing is nice, I’m here to eat!

Sacramento Dining

The first night I stumbled up 58 Degrees & Holding, a cute little wine bar that has great food as well. I had the most delicious ahi poke on top of seaweed salad and three of the freshest, most amazing oysters I have maybe ever eaten. This was accompanied with a glass of Prosecco – ok… maybe two.

The next night eight bloggers and I went to The Firehouse restaurant in old Sacramento as guests of the Idaho Potato Commission. This restaurant and their team really blew it out of the water with a chef’s tasting menu featuring Idaho Potatoes in each course except for the palette cleanser (a sorbet).

Above from left to right –  halibut amuse bouche with crunchy potato chips, butternut squash and potato soup, and crispy pork belly with fingerlings. Below – seared duck with a potato “nest” and quail egg, a HUGE steak with a potato galette and finally even the blue cheese cheesecake for dessert was garnished with yellow, red and purple potato chips.

After that dinner I wasn’t sure I’d ever need to eat again yet the next day for lunch I found myself at Magpie for an awesome pear cocktail and a BLT with avocado.

Last stop was Mulvaney’s B&L. We had a whole table of small plates to share but I just got photos of a few, including the tomatoes and burrata and the halibut. Of course there was some nice wine to accompany it all.

Thanks for all the great dining options Sacramento. I have a feeling I have only scratched the surface. I guess I’ll just have to start a list for the next time I come to visit.
